Life expectancy in the US is continuing to drop because of accidental deaths from the prescription and illicit opioids that are sweeping the country. This is the second year in a row that life expectancy declines in the US - to 78.6 years in 2016, down from 78.7 years in 2015 and 78.8 in 2014, according to a report by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). In 2015, a study found that death rates in the US were rising for middle-aged white Americans because of suicide, drugs, and alcohol abuse. A study published in JAMA in September showed that from 1970 to 2000, life expectancy in the US rose by about 2.5 months every year, then slowed starting in 2000, and stopped altogether in 2014. That's because deaths from drug overdoses skyrocketed: In 2000, more than 17,000 people died of drug overdoses. Today, that number has almost quadrupled. The latest data from the NCHS shows that, as a result of the opioid epidemic, death rates increased for younger age groups and decreased for older people since 2015. In October, President Donald Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency - a move intended to expand access to treatment and loosen regulations to fight the epidemic. US stocks were sharply lower in midday on Tuesday, deepening a global sell-off as investors worry that a long winning streak has pushed valuations too far. Many students from Asian countries opt to study foran MBA in Canada, but might they be better offcloser to home? On day one, we compare Asian andCanadian schools. Their fortunes have contrasted over the past 19editions of the annual FT Global MBA ranking, bothin terms of the numbers of ranked schools and actualranks. The FT published its first MBA ranking in 1999. Itincluded the top 50 programmes worldwide, whichincluded no Asian schools, 31 US schools, 16 fromEurope and three from Canada. Among the latter, both Toronto`s Rotman School of Management and Ivey School of Business atWestern University have been ranked continuously in all 19 editions up to 2017. Funds run by Morgan Stanley, UBS and BelgraveCapital Management have topped a table of 2017`sbest-performing investments after returning at least70 per cent on the back of rising markets in Asia. The best-performing fund globally was the $122mVitruvius Greater China Equity, run by boutiqueasset manager Belgrave, which returned 81 per centin 2017. Morgan Stanley`s Asia Opportunity and twoChina-focused funds from UBS also ranked in thetop four. In total, 14 of the 20 funds that generated topreturns in 2017 specialised in investing in China, according to figures compiled for FTfm byMorningstar, the data provider. The data includes open-ended funds based in Europe, the US,Canada and offshore jurisdictions with at least $100m in assets. Tencent Holdings' WeChat, China's most popular messenger app, denied storing users' chat histories, after a top businessman was quoted in media reports as saying he believed Tencent was monitoring everyone's account. "WeChat does not store any users' chat history. That is only stored in users' mobiles, computers and other terminals," WeChat said in a post on the social media platform. "WeChat will not use any content from user chats for big data analysis. Because of WeChat's technical model that does not store or analyse user chats, the rumour that 'we are watching your WeChat everyday' is pure misunderstanding." 2017 was the safest year in history for commercial airlines, according to industry research. There were no passenger jets crashes anywhere in the world, separate reports by Dutch consultancy To70 and The Aviation Safety Network found. But To70 warned that despite high safety levels on passenger planes, the "extraordinarily" low accident rate must be seen as "good fortune". A report by the Airline Safety Network said there were a total of ten fatal accidents, resulting in 79 deaths last year. That compared with 16 accidents and 303 lives lost in 2016. The organisation based its figures on incidents involving civil aircraft certified to carry at least 14 people. The most serious accident of 2017 came in January when a Turkish cargo plane crashed into a village in Kyrgyzstan killing all four crew and 35 people on the ground. Neither report counted military or helicopter accidents, meaning the year's worst air disaster, the crash of a Burmese Y-8 military transporter plane, which crashed in June killing all 122 people on board did not appear in the statistics. The Trump administration is considering rolling back a rule that allows thousands of visa-holders to work in the US along with their spouses. The Department of Homeland Security has announced it is reviewing the Obama-era rule, which allowed spouses of certain H-1B visa holders to work in the US. H1-B visas are granted to foreign workers with a graduate-level education or above, who come to the US to work in specialty occupations like finance or engineering. The 2015 rule allows the spouses of H-1B visa holders who are seeking Green Card status to work in the country as well, under special H-4 visas. As part of a broader crackdown on legal and illegal immigration, the Trump administration is considering revoking that rule in 2018. A brief memo from the Department of Homeland Security said that it is was reviewing the rule in light of Trump's "Buy American and Hire American" executive order. Employers who default on paying migrant workers' wages should be placed on a national blacklist, the head of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said. Yin Weimin, the minister, said that governments at all levels should "thoroughly check" on any wages that may be in arrears as Chinese New Year approaches, and set a deadline for companies and employers to clear up the situation. "Those who disregard the deadline for paying wages for no reason should be severely punished and put on the blacklist," he said. The checks should focus on sectors where migrant workers are frequently hired, such as the construction industry, labor-intensive manufacturing industries and restaurants, Yin said. The ministry issued a regulation in September creating a national blacklist to punish employers that fail to pay migrant workers. Those on the blacklist could face punishments from as many as 30 government departments - such as limited access to government financial support, purchases and bidding - and could be barred from favorable tax policies. What are the issues that will shape the global energy market in 2018? What will be the energy mix, trade patterns and price trends? Every country is different and local factors, including politics, are important. But at the global level there are four key questions, and each of which answers is highly uncertain. The first question is whether Saudi Arabia is stable. The kingdom`s oil exports now mostly go to Asia but the volumes involved mean that any volatility will destabilise a market where speculation is rife. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is apparently in control but it is a strange and fragile sort of control that requires the imprisonment of dozens of senior businessmen including members of the royal family, the concentration of power in the hands of one individual and a huge international PR campaign to persuade the world that MbS is a modernising liberal. That is certainly not the view held in Yemen or across the Middle East. Behind the grand plans for a new $500bn city (sorry, "urban metropolis for the world") run by robots and the radical notion of allowing Saudi women to drive for the first time is a degree of old-fashioned religious fanaticism directed against the Shia communities across the region and Iran in particular. This could produce real instability over the next few months. The risk is that an open conflict, which Iran and Saudi have traditionally avoided despite all their differences, would spread and hit oil production and trade. It is worth remembering that the Gulf states account for a quarter of global production and over 40 per cent of all the oil traded globally. The threat to stability is all the greater given that Iran is likely to win any such clash and to treat the result as a licence to reassert its influence in the region. The second question is how rapidly production of oil from shale rock will grow in the US - 2017 has seen an increase of 600,000 barrels a day to over 6m. The increase in global prices over the past six months has made output from almost all America's producing areas commercially viable and drilling activity is rising. A comparable increase in 2018 would offset most of the current Opec production cuts and either force another quota reduction or push prices down. The third question concerns China. For the last three years the country has managed to deliver economic growth with only minimal increases in energy consumption. Growth was probably lower than the claimed numbers - the Chinese do not like to admit that they, too, are subject to economic cycles and recessions - but even so the achievement is considerable. The question is whether the trend can be continued. If it can, the result will limit global demand growth for oil, gas and coal. China, which accounts for a quarter of the world`s daily energy use, is the swing consumer. If energy efficiency gains continue, CO2 emissions will remain flat or even fall. The country's economy is changing and moving away from heavy industry fuelled largely by coal to a more service-based one, with a more varied fuel mix. But the pace of that shift is uncertain and some recent data suggests that as economic growth has picked up, so has consumption of oil and coal. Beijing has high ambitions for a much cleaner energy economy, driven not least by the levels of air pollution in many of the major cities; 2018 will show how much progress they are making. The fourth question is, if anything, the most important. How fast can renewables grow? The last few years have seen dramatic reductions in costs and strong increase in supply. The industry has had a great year, with bids from offshore wind for capacity auctions in the UK and elsewhere at record low levels. Wind is approaching grid parity - the moment when it can compete without subsidies. Solar is also thriving: according to the International Energy Agency, costs have fallen by 70 per cent since 2010 not least because of advances in China, which now accounts for 60 per cent of total solar cell manufacturing capacity. The question is how rapidly all those gains can be translated into electric supply. Renewables, including hydro, accounted for just 5 per cent of global daily energy supply according to the IEA's latest data. That is increasing - solar photovoltaic capacity grew by 50 per cent in 2016 - but to make a real difference the industry needs a period of expansion comparable in scale to the growth of personal computing and mobile phones in the 1990s and 2000s. The problem is that the industry remains fragmented. Most renewable companies are small and local, and in many cases undercapitalised; some are built to collect subsidies. A radical change will be necessary to make the industry global and capable of competing on the scale necessary to displace coal and natural gas. The coming year will show us whether it is ready for that challenge. In many ways, the energy business is at a moment of change and transition. Every reader will have their own view on each of the four questions. To me, the prospect is of supply continuing to outpace demand. If that is right, the surge in oil prices over the past two months is a temporary and unsustainable phenomenon. It would take another Middle East war to change the equation. "We are now able to capture the voice of the passenger despite all the noise in the station," said Tian Biao, a voice control engineer from Alibaba. "As far as I know, this machine is the first one around the world to accurately capture the right information under a noisy circumstance." China's nine years of compulsory education will not be extended to 12 years, the Department of Basic Education of the Ministry of Education said in a statement. "We are yet to have the conditions to include senior high school in compulsory education," the department said, adding that the main task in terms of senior high school education is for it to meet the needs of more junior high school graduates. According to the statement, despite the goal for senior high school education to be implemented nationwide by 2020, which was included in a plan issued earlier this year, it does not mean senior high school education will be compulsory and free. Fifty years ago, British inventors made and marketed the first electronic "breathalyzer". The alcohol gauge has become standard issue for U.S. law enforcement cracking down on drunk driving. In a sign of the times, U.S. police are now hoping to enlist the so-called "Textalyzer." The device, in development by a company called Cellebrite, plugs into a driver's smartphone and can tell police whether that person sent a text, e-mail or some other type of electronic message. Much of this information could be found by checking the device's call log and messaging apps, but the Textalyzer aggregates all of that information in one place. Sending or reading a text typically takes a driver's eyes off the road for about five seconds. At 55 miles per hour, that's like driving the length of an entire footballfield with your eyes closed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA reports that in 2015 nearly 3,500 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving drivers who were talking on the phone or texting. But several open questions remain related to the Textalyzer. For one, it's not clear how officers will access a device if it's password protected. Textalyzer's legality is also up for debate. In 2014 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that police officers cannot legally search a mobile phone for content created within the past 180 days without a warrant. Regardless, several states plan to test the device. Over the years all sorts of bad advice has been given to help people "beat" Breathalyzer tests. Let's hope the only way people beat the Textalyzer is by keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.
